Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is one of most popular temple temple near Rishikesh. Neelkanth Temple is hindu temple of Lord Shiva. It is 25 kms far from Rishikesh. According to legends in ancient time Devas and Asuras churn the sea to get nectar. Before nectar Halahal (poison) came. Lord Shiva saved the earth drinking that poison. Due to the poison Lord Shiva’s neck became blue. Neelkanth means person with blue throat so Lord Shiva’s Temple here is known as Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. According to ancient religious books like Skand Purana Lord Shiva meditated here after the incident for very long time.
During Sawan Month (which comes in july/aug) thousands of devotees come here to get the blessing from Lord Shiva. Devotees also offer River Ganga water to Lord Shiva. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is located at the height of 1330 meters. You will get some wonderful views of mountains and valley.
How to reach: Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is easily accessible by road. It is 25 kms far from Rishikesh. There are two ways to reach this temple. First one is from the Badrinath Highway and Neelkanth Bridge 7 kms far from Lakshman Jhula and other is bridge near AIIMS and than through swargashram area.
